Capstone Project: Carrie on Student vs. Faculty Field Hockey Game

The name James River High School was first introduced to Allyson Steiner, a now senior in the Leadership and International Relations Center, during Mr. Roarty’s sixth grade gym class. He inspired her to continue playing field hockey and to go to James River where his wife, Carrie Roarty was a gym teacher and coach. Mrs. Roarty passed that year due to cancer. As a tribute to the Roarty Family and to honor her courageous battle, Allyson put on the 5th Student vs. Faculty Field Hockey Game to benefit the Carrie Monroe Roarty Scholarship Fund. On November 20, 2019 there was a great participation between the eighteen

staff members and Varsity Field Hockey team at James River. The faculty came out victorious in a 4-3 win over the students.

This event raised approximately $1,700 through ticket sales, donations, and concession sales. The scholarship will be given to a student who best exemplifies the courage, kind nature, and competitive spirit of Mrs. Roarty.

Allyson has also partnered with VCU Massey Cancer Center and will be giving patients handmade blankets and cards that the students of James River made.
