James River Model United Nations: Capstone Project

On February 8 and 9

, 2019, senior Justin Carminucci hosted the second annual James River Model United Nations conference at James River High School. Almost 50 middle school students from Manchester, Tomahawk, Robious and Providence Middle Schools attended, spending the weekend debating important world issues in various committees. The theme for the conference was the Global Goals for Sustainable Development, which were incorporated in all committees and guest speakers. Students discussed important topics such as the denuclearization of North Korea, childhood malnutrition, and the protection of marine life. By the end of the weekend, students came up with fantastic solutions to these issues. On Saturday, representatives from this year’s charity, the World Pediatric Project, came to speak to students about the important work that they do for children in developing countries that are in need of medical assistance. Delegate Roxann Robinson also spoke to students about her position as a member of Virginia’s legislature and how the work she does impacts the community and beyond. Overall, the conference was a huge success and provided a great opportunity for students to explore the world’s most pressing issues from different perspectives. Justin would like to thank all volunteers and participants for making JRMUN II a success!
